Summer Stamp and Stencil Release with Dina Wakley Media

Are you ready for some new stamps and stencils? Well, yeah, dumb question, I know. We always want new stamps and stencils. Sometimes getting something new is how I jolt myself out of a rut. It's so fun to have new images to work with.

I loved the Boxed Faces from a few releases ago, and knew I wanted to do some circular faces. The faces in "Oops, Oh Well" remind me a bit of the Moon Faces stencil. They're easy to use and are a great focal point. I wanted to do some new birdies to add to the flock, I hope you enjoy the "Scribbly Bird Cousins." "Splatter Girl" came from a large scroll that I made a few years ago. I took the face that I painted, shrunk it down, and voila! A really cool image! I lifted the textures and images from "Text and Scribbles" right from my own journals. I'm sort of obsessed with these.

Show Us Your Media Challenge 2! Make art with us!

Wow, what an great first month of the #showusyourMEdia challenge. You all produced stellar, moving, personal art. Art that matters. Thank you so much for creating and especially for sharing. If you're new to the challenge, check the bottom of this post for a recap on rules, etc.

Here is our next challenge. It runs from July 20 to August 16, 2017.

If you wouldn’t say it to a friend, don’t say it to yourself. ~Jane Travis
Create a piece of art about the things you say to yourself. Are you positive? Negative? Both?

This challenge inspired me. As I have gotten older, I have found that I am kinder to myself. I still have my insecurities, my sadness. But my self-talk tends to be motivational. If I don't give myself a pep talk, who will? I made several pages because once I got started, I couldn't stop.

Supplies used:

Dina Wakley Media Journal

Dina Wakley Media Stamps: Scribbly Birds in Flight

Dina Wakley Media Board

Dina Wakley Media Scribble Sticks

Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paint in Cheddar,  Black, and Turquoise

Dina Wakley Media Tape, White

Dina Wakley Media Comb, Squares

Fudeball Black Pen

Dina Wakley Media stencils, Almost Ikat
Tim Holtz Idea-logy Big Chat stickers
Tim Holtz Idea-ology Plain Tissue Wrap

Here's a little journaling tip. I always have a big drawer full of "art bits." These are warm ups, pieces of art I don't like or that just didn't work, etc. When I sit down to journal and feel stumped for an idea, I dig through my "art bits" drawer and pull out pieces that appeal to me. I cut or tear them up and repurpose them for new pages. I used this process for all of the pages that I made for this challenge. The birds on the Media Board came from a box that I created in a class that I taught. I tore the box apart and used the panels as the focal point for the pages. The tag can from the "art bits" box, too. The woman that I cut in half was a pretty ugly drawing that I did five years ago. It's out of proportion…I draw better now….but it looked kind of cool cut in half. The orange circles were from a painting that was downright ugly. When I cut the circles out, they were perfect for the page.

The backgrounds on the bird pages are almost entirely Scribble Stick, with the exception of the Cheddar color on the page with the Blackberry and Cheddar background, and the Turquoise paint I put through the Almost Ikat stencil on the face page.

Are you ready? I can't wait to see your art.

Challenge Rules Recap
I want to put the “me” back in mixed media. All art is personal, whether it be a card or an art journal page or a painting. Join me as we begin a series of monthly challenges and prompts that will fuel your creative spirit and help you delve into the ME of MEdia.

  • We will announce monthly challenges on the Ranger blog on the third Thursday of each month.
  • Use at least one Dina Wakley Media product in your project. If your product is not obvious (like paint), please list the colors you used.
  • You can make anything you like—a card, an art journal page, a tag, a canvas, anything!
  • Interpret each challenge any way you like. You can be literal or you can use it as a springboard and see where it takes you. Let the challenge inspire you and stretch you.
  • Try to journal on your piece. Write your thoughts about each prompt. You can write a little or you can write a lot, but do your best to incorporate your thoughts and feelings into the piece.
  • When you complete a challenge, please share it on your blog and social media (Instagram/Facebook) with the tags #showusyourMEdia and #rangerink.
  • We will do two random drawings each month for a prize. We will search the hashtag #showusyourMEdia on Instagram for one winner, and then on Facebook for the second winner. To be clear, you must use the hashtag #showusyourMEdia on either Instagram or Facebook in order to show up in the search and to be eligible to win. You have until the third Wednesday of each month to complete the previous month’s challenge.
  • We will announce the previous month’s winner AND the new challenge on the third Thursday of each month.

Note this challenge does not take the place of the monthly challenges we have in the Dina Wakley Media Tribe Facebook group. If you're not a member of the tribe, please join us! Artists in the group post lots of cool art and inspiration.

Happy to announce a new monthly challenge, Show Us Your MEdia

Are you ready to go on a personal art journey with me?

I started keeping a journal in 1979. My first entry was the day of my grandmother’s funeral. I wrote it in pencil, and later my dad told me I should write in pen, so my thoughts would have more permanence. That day was the start of my life-long belief in journaling, in writing yourself down, in making your mark on the world.

When I discovered mixed-media and art journaling in 2004, it was a natural fit. I love art. I love journaling. The marriage of those things is pure joy.

I want to put the “me” back in mixed media. All art is personal, whether it be a card or an art journal page or a painting. Join me as we begin a series of monthly challenges and prompts that will fuel your creative spirit and help you delve into the ME of MEdia.

Our FIRST challenge starts today!

The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance. ~Aristotle
Create a piece of art that shares with us your “why.” Why do you create? What compels you?

Here is how I interpreted the challenge.

What is my why? Why do I create? I create because I am compelled to write myself on paper. I create to make sense of my self and my world. I create to make my mark. I create so I have a place to put my sadnesses and my joys. I create because it is fulfilling, and fun. I create because it heals. I create because I want to matter.

This is a journal page on the burlap in the Dina Wakley Media Journal. The canvas circles are drawings I did with Scribble Sticks and the Fudeball Pen on a canvas page in the journal, then I cut them out to use as layered elements. I wrote on white Media Tape with Scribble Sticks. Paint colors include: Cheddar, Fuchsia, Turquoise, White, Night.

Spotlight on Scribble Sticks

Well, Scribble Sticks are finalllllly shipping out from the Ranger Warehouse and will be at your fave store SOON, if they're not there already. I just love them. I really do.

MediaScribbleSticks

ScribbleSticks_VerticalInsideShot

What they look like: a crayon.

What they are not: a crayon. Why? Because Scribble Sticks contain NO wax. They're more like a woodless colored pencil. They're heavy and you can lay down lots of pigment by pressing hard, or you can color lightly for a soft effect.

And two of the BEST things about them is 1) they are water-soluble, and 2) they write on dried paint. YESSSS!!! Finally, a medium that will write will on dried paint.

What can you do with Scribble Sticks?

  • Use them dry to color in images and coloring books.
  • Color in dry and then wet the pigment so it looks like watercolor.
  • Lay some pigment down on paper and then dissolve it with water to make a background.
  • Try it on both primed and unprimed paper. You'll get a different result depending on if you've used gesso, and what kind of substrate you use.
  • Draw with them! Scribble, sketch!
  • Create shadows with them around collage.

Here's an assortment of art that I've done where I've used Scribble Sticks.

On the piece below, I used the sticks to color in the stamped image.

Ch 02

On the piece below, I used them to draw on both the canvas in the journal and on the watercolor paper in the journal.

I used them to color the flower on the tag below.

I used them on the Kraft pages below and on the Media Tape.

I used them to draw all of these faces on old ledger paper:

Don't let the Scribble Sticks intimidate you. Think of them like a stick of paint. Use them wet, use them dry, use them to color, use them to accent, use them to shadow and shade, use them to draw…..and have a blast!

I am excited to be doing an all new online course, Ordered Chaos!

It has been a LONG TIME since I did new online course. Recently, the amazing Jeanne Oliver contacted me and asked if I was interested in doing a course for her wonderful network, the Jeanne Oliver Creative Network. I adore Jeanne and I am excited and honored to be doing an all new online course! Early registration is open now.

Spotlight on the new Media Tools

I love the new Media Tools in my line. They are silicone-tipped brushes and they're great for all kinds of mark-making! Think of them like a paintbrush. If you can do it with a paintbrush, you can do it with one of these tools to get a different effect or mark. They work wonderfully in the thick Dina Wakley Media acrylic paints. Here are three of my favorite ways to use the tools.

DW_MediaTools_MDA53897

1. Scribble right into paint (this technique is called sgraffito). Each tip will give you a different scribble mark.

Dw 01

2. Use the each tool to make interesting marks. Each tip will give you a different shaped mark. The mark will change depending on how quickly you move your hand, how much paint you put on the tip, and how hard you press. So fun!

3. Use the very edge of each tool tip to create interesting, artistic lines.

Don't forget to try the tools on your gelatin plates, too. How are you going to use your Media Tools?
