Show Us Your Media Challenge 6! Happiness!

Your pages for last month's challenge helped us learn more about you. We love that!  Our next challenge runs from November 16 to December 21, 2017. Here you go….

Create a piece of art about happiness. What discoveries have you made about happiness? What makes you happy? What little things, what big things?

Happiness is…Journal Page

I started with a canvas page in my Media Journal. I bent the covers back so I could sew lines on the canvas with my machine.

IMG_7505

Then I colored over the sewing with Magenta and Turquoise Scribble Sticks, and wet them with a paint brush and water. Right into the wet layer I added some Lemon Scribble Stick.

IMG_7507

When it was dry, I journaled on the stitching with the Fudeball pen. I created the collaged tags with the stamps from the Circle Patterns set. I dug through my "art bits" box and found some tags that I had already painted. I stamped the images on various tags and cut them out. I used Elephant paint on the Scribbly Circles Background stamp to start each tag, then added the stamped images, bits of ephemera, and a little strip of journaling. I put the tags on the canvas with Media Tape, so they can be flipped through like pages in a book. I cut the hearts freehand from painted papers, too, and used Multi Medium to glue them on the tags and onto the canvas.

What makes me happy? Soooo many things. At first, I thought this page might be about simple things, like diet Coke and Kate Spade purses and not setting an alarm in the morning. But as I started my journaling, it became more profound and I couldn't help but record some BIG things, traveling the world, my faith, and my family.

Bad blogger! Last few teaching gigs of the year!

I know, I know, I'm a bad blogger. I post WAY more regularly on Instagram and Facebook.

My last three teaching gigs of the year are: Everything Scrapbook & Stamps in Lake Worth, FL.; Paper Parachute in Beaverton, OR; The Queen's Ink in Baltimore, MD. Check my teaching schedule for dates and links and contact the stores for all the details.

And don't forget about my cruise in August, 2018! Last I checked, about 2/3rds of the class spots were taken.  Please join us! We are going to have a blast.

Today I started these 36"x36" canvases that I have had for sooooo long. Who knows where they'll end up, I'm letting layers dry for now.

IMG_7530

And, per usual, I got paint EVERYWHERE. I have accepted my messy ways.

IMG_7529

I have had lots of furry help in the studio, today, too. This kitty has been on my lap for hours. He is so fun. I have managed to not paint him (so far).

Show Us Your Media Challenge 5! What Makes You YOU?

Fullsizeoutput_1a32

We love seeing your art. Your pages last month were very moving. When you are authentic in your art, it makes your work exceptional. Our next challenge runs from October 19 to November 16, 2017. Here you go….

Fullsizeoutput_1b56

Create a piece of art about what makes you, YOU. How are you unique? What is your you-ness? What makes you real? Imperfect? Flawed? Quirky? Weird? Beautiful? Magical?

I love autobiographical art journaling. For me, examining who I am, how I am feel, why I feel how I feel, and where I want to go in the future is an integral part of what I do.

For this page, I started with a picture of me. I printed it out on my black & white laser printer, cut it out, and used my Gel Medium to glue it onto a watercolor page (pre-coated with gesso, of course). I over-painted the photo loosely. Then I added background colors, painted the flowers, and added journaling.

I think over-painting photos is a great way to practice painting faces. I like to use a dry brush. I keep my paint layers thin so I don't obscure the image underneath. I follow the photo to paint dark paint in the dark areas and light paint in the light areas. If I paint over something that I want to define better, I use the Stabilo All pencil to outline it and "bring it back" (i.e. nose, mouth, eyes).

I mixed a flesh tone with bits of Cheddar, Magenta, and Ocean. That gave me a pretty brown. Then I added white to lighten it a bit. My favorite shadow color is Umber. It makes fantastic shadows!

Show Us Your Media Challenge 4! All about fears….

Fullsizeoutput_1a32

We love seeing your art. I hope you are finding these challenges both meaningful and inspiring. I sure am! Our next challenge runs from September 21 to October 18, 2017. Here you go….

IMG_7180

Create a piece of art about your fears. What are you afraid of? How do you handle your fears? How do you overcome them?

Ah, fears. I try not to live my life in fear of things, but I am a PRO at worrying, and I do sometimes worry about my fears. We all have them, the key is to not let our fears paralyze or define us.  I don't know what got into me, but I did two two-page spreads for this challenge (I hardly ever do 2-page spreads).

Fears Journal Spread

Idea-ology by Tim Holtz Cling Foam Stamps, Block Upper
Dina Wakley Media stencil, Shape Mashup
Ranger Mini Blending Tool
Dina Wakley Media paint brushes
Dina Wakley Media Scribble Sticks
Dina Wakley Media acrylic paint colors: Black, White, Magenta, Turquoise, Lemon, Cheddar
Fudeball Pen, black
Ranger Multi Medium

This page is about my artistic fears. I firmly believe that quality art is correlated to the quantity of art you make, and I am living proof that ANYONE can be an artist. I do sometimes worry that I'm not good, though, that I'm a giant art poser. Ha. Don't we all feel that way a bit?

I started this page by loading up the Splatter Girl stamp with various colors of paint, and stamping her directly onto the watercolor pages in my journal (no gesso first, can you believe it?). Then I painted free-hand silhouettes around the stamped images so the faces would be visible through the figures. I stamped the words with Tim's Cling Foam alphabet stamps and my White acrylic paint. I used the black Scribble stick to outline the abstract figures and the Fudeball pen was perfect for the journaling, once the paint was all dry.

This page started with a concept, "Invisibility." I wanted to stamp the girl so that she got lighter and lighter with each iteration. Can you tell the colors change as the images spread across the page? This page is how I don't want to be invisible, how I want to make a difference.

I started this page with loosely-painted colors on pre-gesso'd watercolor pages in my journal. While the backgrounds dried, I took a large piece of Tissue Wrap and stamped Splatter Girl on it with varying colors of acrylic paint (Black, Night, Medieval, and Elephant). When all the paint dried, I used my Gel Medium to glue the stamped Tissue Wrap onto the page. Then I added additional stenciling and some journaling with the Fudeball pen. I stamped the circle from Text and Scribbles with Black acrylic paint onto a painted piece of paper that was in my "art bits" box. I throw unfinished/ugly pieces and warmups into that box and use them as collage papers. They come in handy. I cut the circles out and glued them over the whole spread.

Two New Stamp Sets! Surprise Sept Release!

Howdy! Happy to show you two new stamp sets. I am so excited about these. We did them in the special silicone clear, so they are incredibly durable and they don't break down like some clear stamps do. Doing them in clear also kept the cost down, since the stamps are big! They are funky and fun and great for all kinds of backgrounds.

Let me introduce you to your new obsession….we have Scribbly Circles Background and Funky Faces Background.

  MDC58380_ScribbblyCirclesBackground MDC58373_FunkyFacesBackground

If you're good at details, you might have noticed these stamps in other projects I've posted…heh. I know, I'm sneaky. Here are a few more samples. This is a tag book mounted onto a journal page…it folds out and is decorated on both sides:

Show Us Your Media Challenge 3! All about inspiration…

It is a privilege to see your art when you participate in this challenge. It is meaningful and powerful. Thank you. Let's keep it up. Our next challenge runs from August 17 to Sept 20, 2017. Here you go….

You can’t wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club. ~Jack London
Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working. ~Pablo Picasso

Create a piece of art about what inspires you. Do you purposely seek inspiration, or do you let it come to you organically? What do you do when you’re not feeling inspired?

As I thought about this challenge, I realized there's no one source of inspiration for me. I get inspiration from color, from nature, from other people's art, from design, from patterns….everything is fair game and might set me off on a creative path. The key is living so that you notice what is around you.

My family and I just got back from a trip to Tokyo, Japan. We had a fabulous time, and wow, I came home feeling incredibly inspired. One of the many beautiful sights we saw was this huge field of water lilies in Ueno park. We gasped when we saw them. The flowers were enormous, about 8" across, or bigger. The lilies covered an incredible amount of area. Stunning!

This pic with my son shows you the size of just one petal from the flower…it's almost the size of my son's hand.

These lilies were on my mind when I started this challenge. Painting flowers has been popular in mixed media for awhile, and I always wanted to try it, but never felt moved to do it. After seeing the flowers in Japan, I knew I had to paint them! I did two pages in my journal. The first page, on the watercolor paper in the Dina Wakley Media journal, is directly inspired by the lilies. The second page, on a burlap page in the journal, was just an experiment to see what would happen if I painted flowers on it. I enjoyed playing so much that I even made two larger flower paintings, inspired by my journal pages.

Here's the burlap page. I found it pretty easy to paint on the burlap, but here are a few things to keep in mind:
  • Don't gesso it, unless you use clear gesso. Why cover up that great color?
  • The burlap is absorbent so it will require more paint.
  • The burlap's texture sort of inhibits fine details…keep in abstract and loose and it will be easier.
  • Paint does go through the weave to the back, so put a piece of deli or wax paper behind to protect the page underneath. Or, be a rebel and let it go through and have an instant background for that page. Ha. The back of the burlap painting doesn't look awesome, so I think I'll just put some collage over it and then it will look great.

After I made these journal pages, I was inspired to make some larger abstract floral paintings. I did these on 300 lb watercolor paper, gesso'd first. The size is about 11"x15" (I take one large 300 lbs sheet, and tear it into quarters, and that is the size that it ends up). Can you see how I took what I created in my journal and used it as a springboard for the paintings?

Alright, show me what inspires YOU. I can't wait to see.

Challenge Rules Recap
I want to put the “me” back in mixed media. All art is personal, whether it be a card or an art journal page or a painting. Join me as we begin a series of monthly challenges and prompts that will fuel your creative spirit and help you delve into the ME of MEdia.

  • We will announce monthly challenges on the Ranger blog on the third Thursday of each month.
  • Use at least one Dina Wakley Media product in your project. If your product is not obvious (like paint), please list the colors you used.
  • You can make anything you like—a card, an art journal page, a tag, a canvas, anything!
  • Interpret each challenge any way you like. You can be literal or you can use it as a springboard and see where it takes you. Let the challenge inspire you and stretch you.
  • Try to journal on your piece. Write your thoughts about each prompt. You can write a little or you can write a lot, but do your best to incorporate your thoughts and feelings into the piece.
  • When you complete a challenge, please share it on your blog and social media (Instagram/Facebook) with the tags #showusyourMEdia and #rangerink.
  • We will do two random drawings each month for a prize. We will search the hashtag #showusyourMEdia on Instagram for one winner, and then on Facebook for the second winner. To be clear, you must use the hashtag #showusyourMEdia on either Instagram or Facebook in order to show up in the search and to be eligible to win. You have until the third Wednesday of each month to complete the previous month’s challenge.
  • We will announce the previous month’s winner AND the new challenge on the third Thursday of each month.

Note this challenge does not take the place of the monthly challenges we have in the Dina Wakley Media Tribe Facebook group. If you're not a member of the tribe, please join us! Artists in the group post lots of cool art and inspiration.
