Surprise! Washi Tape Release!

Surprise! I'm so happy to show you three sets of new Dina Wakley Media washi tape! I love washi…the colors, the patterns, the versatility. I hope you enjoy these new designs. We have two new sets of printed tape, and we are reintroducing the plain white tape with a 2" width!!! YAAAAHOOOOOO! You all know how much I love my plain white tape–you can paint it, stamp it, stencil it, draw on it, and more. So exciting to have a 2" width.

I've actually been sneaking this washi onto my pages for a couple of months. Have you noticed any of it? ha. Here I used it to decorate an accordion book that I added to a journal page:

Dina washi 02

Here I used it to make this artsy sun over all of this randomly-glued collage tissue:

Dina wash 03

Here I used it to fill in the bodies of these silhouettes:

Dina washi 04

Here I used it in a paper weaving on a journal page:

Dina washi 05

Here I put the tape on cardstock, cut hearts from the cardstock, and then glued them onto this collage. I did the stitched face by first gluing down one of my new collage tissue faces. Then I stitched over the lines with embroidery floss. Then I ripped the tissue away, leaving the stitches:

How do you plan on using the new tapes? Can't wait to see!

It is September. In Arizona, it's still over 100 F, and I am always envious of those of you who actually get a Fall season. I hope you have lots of plans to create this Autumn. Keep creating, keep sharing. We love, love, love seeing your work.

What have you learned from your hardships? How have they changed you? Have they made you better? Explore this theme in your work this month.

I made this page on my Art Journaling Cruise (I taught on a cruise at the end of August). I went back today and added more journaling. I typically work this way–I create, and then add journaling later. It feels good just to focus on writing. Plus, you know your mediums are completely dry when you journal at a later date.

To make this page, I made an acrylic background. Then I used original Gel Medium to glue down the face. After it dried, I painted it in with my acrylic paint.

I got my own back. ~Maya Angelou

Create a piece of art about how you take care of yourself, stand up for yourself, or about how you don’t. Do you have your own back? If you don’t, who does?

Sometimes it's hard to take care of ourselves. Where is the line between being selfish and filling our own cup? I struggle with that. All the obligations and "have-to's" seem overwhelming. I have a hard time relaxing because I am always worried about the fires I've left unattended.

That is why I love scuba diving. When I'm under the water, it's the only time I am not a ball of stress. Under the water the focus is breathing, and weightlessness. It's truly like being in another world, and it's amazing. My husband doesn't enjoy diving, but I've been making time to get to the ocean anyway. I need it. This journal page is symbolic of how I'm getting to the ocean, making it a priority. It's my form of having my own back.

Dina Wakley Media August Release!

Ready for some new creative goods? I'm excited to share my August release with you. I have new stamps, stencils, and…..COLLAGE PAPERS! Plus we added fine line tip applicators that fit on the paint bottles. Yessssss.

First up, stamps. I have four new sets. For the Love of Circles is great for abstract focal points and background imagery. Quirky People come from collages in my journals. The little boy with the radiating crown is my dad! Scribbled Silhouettes is dramatic and fun. Soul and Heart has some new faces and phrases for you.

MDR63889_ScribbledSilhouettes MDR63896_SoulAndHeart

Next, we have four new stencils. Circles Faces are fun abstract faces. Ladders is great for backgrounds. The Best Hearts are my favorite imperfect hearts. And last, What We Do lists some of our favorite pursuits.

And….new collage papers! I am thrilled we could do these again this year. We have three new sets, two large and one small word set. A fun variation is that we have collage papers in both black and white printing in these sets. The white printing is great on dark backgrounds or when you want a subtle effect. The packs have two black and two white of each design.

We also added fine line tip applicators that screw right onto your paint bottles. Yay! This means we can have our fine tip writing with both the tubes and the bottles.

Show Us Your Media Challenge 14: Discoveries

Fullsizeoutput_1a32

Are you finding time this summer for any art? My schedule has been super, super busy, so I have to keep it simple lately. Even simple art is GREAT art, because it is art that is DONE. Remember one of my mantras…done is better than perfect! I am finding that to be so true this busy, hot summer.

IMG_9767

"And maybe that’s the bravest thing you can do. Let go of the concept of doing something right and remember that there are no mistakes, only discoveries." ~Mati Rose

Create a piece of art about making discoveries. Are you too caught up in mistakes you might make? How can you overcome fears of mistakes? What discoveries have changed your life? How do you live with an attitude of daily discovery?

I always tell people that I am hard on myself in every area of my life, EXCEPT for art. If this isn't fun, why do it? I love to make bad art because that means I am making discoveries. I might discover what works well together, or what doesn't. I might discover a new color combination. No matter what, it's not wasted time. It's the discoveries that matter. It's the spilling that matters. If you end up with good art (and you will, eventually), that's just a bonus.

This is a page in my large Media Journal. It's super simple–lay down a tag, mask around it three times. Fill in the voids with text and stamping. Add a focal point image. Done!!

Dina Wakley Media June Release…Pouring Medium and Cell Creator!

IMG_9488

Pouring paint is all the rage, and we've been developing a pouring medium for months. At Ranger, we're all obsessed with it!! We are so excited that release day is finally here and we can share. Big props to Steve, the Ranger chemist, and to the entire Ranger crew who worked hard to make this possible.

DM Pouring Medium Cell Creator June 2018 PR
DM Pouring Medium Cell Creator June 2018 PR

So what it is….Pouring Medium is an acrylic medium that you mix with Dina Wakley Media paint. This mixture becomes a pourable, fluid paint that you play with to create interesting effects. To help you create cells in your pours, we also created Cell Creator. Just a few drops in your pour mixtures creates serious MAGIC! You can also get mixing cups, spatulas, and bottles as pouring accessories.

A few points to note:

  • A good mixing ratio to start with is 4 parts medium to 1 part acrylic.
  • Drying time will depend on where you live. Here in Arizona, my pieces are dry within a few hours, but we don't have humidity.
  • The pouring medium dries to a satin finish.
  • If you add a lot of cell creator to a mixture, your cells will be small. If you add just a drop or two, they'll be bigger. You can play around with quantities and mixtures.
  • The fresher your Dina Wakley Media acrylic paints are, the more easily they will mix into the pouring medium. Paint that is older and starting to dry out will be hard to mix. Definitely use fresh paint.
  • What can you pour on? Pretty much anything. The medium sticks to Media Board, canvas, paper, wood, plastic, glass, metal, cardboard, and more. Out of curiosity, we poured on aluminum foil and we loved the result. Experiment and see what you can come up with.

What can you do with your poured pieces?

  • Stand alone works of art
  • Book covers
  • Backgrounds
  • Collage papers/painted papers
  • Mask/paint on them
  • MORE!

I will definitely be doing future posts with ideas for using your pours.

Here's a video I did to explain the medium:

My friend Su is visiting from England and she had a blast experimenting with the pouring medium. She poured on this box:

Are ya ready to pour with me? I cannot wait to see what you create!

Create a piece of art about your strength and how you overcome life’s trials. What has tried to bury you? How have you dug yourself out of it? How did you grow?

To create this page, I used a drawing/painting that I actually did last year. It came from a page spread I had torn apart. I routinely cannibalize my journals. I tear them apart, form them into something new. I'm never overly attached to anything I make, but it's really the process that matters to me and not the outcome. I did like this face painting, though, so I had saved it. I think it has a lot of raw power and emotion, and it was perfect for this month's challenge.

I had a tag that I had printed with my acrylic paints, the gel plates, and Scribble sticks. I journaled on that and I tucked it behind the drawing on the page.

Dina Wakley Media Supplies:

Acrylic Paint: Night, Fuchsia, Lemon (on the painting), Magenta, Sky (on the tag)
