November Classes at The Creative Quest…

Watercoloring with Spray Ink

Accordion-Spined “Gratitudes” Journal

$35

Friday, November 12

5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Come to class and learn how I use water with spray inks to create interesting backgrounds. We’ll learn the technique, then I will show you how to make this simple accordion-spined journal. My journal is very sparsely decorated, but yours can be as elaborate as you like! I used my journal to reflect on the things I am especially grateful for.

What You Need to Bring

–White gesso

–Sky blue acrylic paint, as well as your other favorite colors

–Your favorite brushes

–Good adhesive, like gel medium, or even a strong dry adhesive like ATG.

–Any stamps & stencils you want to use. I will have an assortment to choose from, too.

–A good black pen for journaling.

–Optional: your own sewing machine. I’ll have mine, but bring your own if you don’t feel like sharing.

If you’re sensitive to spray paint fumes, feel free to bring a mask (we’ll be spraying outside, but sometimes the fumes waft inside anyway).

What You Need to Bring

–Your art journal. I will provide watercolor paper to work on, too.

–White gesso.

What are you loving lately?

Love

Things I'm loving lately:

  • Pumpkin bread. This recipe is da bomb. And it's lame I just said "da bomb," but it applies. I sprinkle the top of the loaves with coarse sugar before I put them in the oven.
  • Caramel Apple Pops.
  • Golden heavy-body acrylic paints in Indian Gold, Green Gold, and Cobalt Violet Hue. Swoon.
  • Making art journal pages for this.
  • Sleep. Sweet sleep.

Why study composition and color? Art journaling has no rules, right?

Right.

I firmly believe there’s value and beauty in every art journal page. Every. Single. One.

But…knowing the rules allows you to put an extra “oomph” into your work. It allows you to manipulate your composition to enhance meaning, it allows you to make conscious decisions about your art. The rules put you in total control…you can follow them, manipulate them, combine them, or even break them. Henri Matisse said, “Composition is the art of arranging in a decorative manner the diverse elements at the painter’s command to express his feelings.” Knowing the rules can actually make you more expressive…and isn’t an art journal all about personal expression?

When you understand design principles, you have power over them…power to arrange them, power to twist them, power to make them do what you want to convey your meaning and intent.

The concept for this workshop came out of the classroom…out of teaching art journaling to students and watching their successes and their frustrations. This class is not a comprehensive review of all design principles. Instead, we explore the main principles of composition that apply to making art journal pages. It’s a true exploration, too…we experiment with the principles, twist them, have fun with them.

Each lesson in this class will explore a composition concept, and it will teach an art technique. Why? Because it’s always fun to have a new art technique to play with. Sometimes a new art technique can keep you busy in your journal for weeks.

This class is for you if you:

  • Feel like exploring.
  • Want to learn some new art techniques to add to your repertoire.
  • Want to understand how composition principles affect what you create.
  • Just want an excuse to paint.

You can work in your current journal, or you can get one just for this class. We’ll be making lots of pages. Lots.

Join me? 🙂
