Create a piece of art about what you where you have been, or where you want to go. Use the quote as a springboard, and see where it takes you.

I grew up in family that traveled a lot. Now, we're blessed because my husband works for American Airlines. That means the world is open to us in a way that costs us far less than it would otherwise. My boys have been to 14 countries (so far), and I have been to 18. We love to travel, we love to be together and experience new foods and sights and cultures. This journal page honors that.

Show Us Your Media Challenge 11: Admiration

Fullsizeoutput_1a32

Oh my goodness. How did it become April already? Do you have spring fever? I hope you are enjoying these challenges as much as we enjoy seeing your art. Keep it up! Here's the next prompt:

IMG_8895

Create a piece of art about what you admire. Is it a grand admiration or is it small and simple? How does what you admire enrich your life?

Lately I have been reflecting on the people who are forces for good in my life. Most of them don't even know that they are influencing and helping me, but they are. Whenever someone does something thoughtful for me, I always think, "Why aren't I more like that?" I so admire people who act in kindness.

Dina Wakley Media Supplies:
Media Journal
Acrylic Paint: Lime, Peacock, Eggplant, Evergreen, Black, Marine
White Gesso
Ultra Thick Gel Medium
Scribble Stick Set 2
Interesting Faces stamp set
Medieval Crosses and Shape Mashup stencils
Two #8 tags
Cotton Watercolor Paper
Paint Brushes

Other Supplies:
Jet Black Archival
Fudeball Pen

I started this page with two mop-up tags. I added the stamped image over them, and cut the hearts from another mop-up tag. I noticed that the tags and hearts were distracting–they were too strong for the stamped image. I dry-brushed White Gesso and over the tags so that my focal point would stand out.

Show Us Your Media Challenge 10: Rest

Fullsizeoutput_1a32

Seeing your work every month is an honor. Truly. Be sure to check the Ranger Ink blog to see if you're a winner! Remember they draw TWO prize winners every month. Are you ready for March? Here we go…

March SUYM 01

Create a piece of art about resting. Can you slow down? How? How do you rest your soul, your mind, your body? What is the difference between quitting and resting?
As I wrote my journaling on this page, the thought came to me, "Seize the rest." We have to seize it.

Sometimes rest seems like a luxury and we don't take enough time to truly take care of ourselves. Lately I've been seizing the rest more. By resting, I don't mean doing nothing. I mean using my free time in ways that are fulfilling. When my depression was really severe, I survived by watching Netflix and lying on my bed. Now that I'm not in the dark abyss like I was, I want to nurture myself better and not be in "survival mode." I decided to do something that I love to do but haven't done in years….knitting. I have taken knitting back up with a vengeance and I look forward to my needle time every day. I think it counts as resting because it is rejuvenating and it is a break from my usual routine.

How do you seize your rest? I can't wait to see your art.

Create a piece of art about who you want to be. Are you already who you want to be? If not, what can you change in your life to become get there?

I think in many ways I am a late bloomer. Some of my greatest loves in life (art, scuba diving), I discovered in my middle-age. It makes me think about Grandma Moses. She started painting seriously when she was 78. 78!!!! And her work hangs in many museums in the world. See, it really is never too late.

I think I will forever be a work in progress. I never want to stop learning and growing. There's still so much I want to do. That's what my two pages are about.

Show Us Your Media Challenge 8! Live in the Moment

Fullsizeoutput_1a32

Happy January! Are you ready for a new Show Us Your Media challenge! You have until Feb 15 to do show us your artwork. Be sure to review the rules and guidelines below (we've updated them for the new year).

IMG_8081

Create a piece of art about living in the moment. Do you worry too much about the future? Dwell in the past? What little things do you do each day that help you live in the moment?

I tend to be a worrier. I am trying to break myself of over-worrying and over-thinking. I am improving as I age. One part of my personality that helps with this is that I do like to be spontaneous, and I do like change. I tend to get bored easily, so if the moment requires that I do something different, I usually go for it. I also try hard to be grateful. For big things and for small things. I try not to rush through, I try to savor the details of life.

Here's my page. I took a super ugly page I did and painted over most of it. Is this a great work of art? Nope. Is it a good journal page? Absolutely!

New Dina Wakley Media Release, Jan 2018!

Hello, my friends! Take a sit and grab a diet Coke, this may take awhile. I am so thrilled to share with you my new release for January 2018, with Ranger Ink.

Remember, today is the product announcement. Your favorite retailers can place their orders for these this week. Then Ranger will ship them to your retailers, so you won't find them in the store tomorrow.  All of my items are shipping the end of January, except where noted below.

Be sure to check out my Art of Dina Wakley facebook page and watch the live release! (You can watch the video later if you can't catch it live.)

First up, let me introduce to you the Dina Wakley Media Apron:

MDA60314_CanvasApron

What you need to know about the apron is that it is oversized. That means it will actually cover us up and protect us from our artistic messes. The hearts are colorful and screen printed and the neck strap is adjustable. Are you excited? WOO HOO! The apron will start shipping the end of February.

Let's go through the new products in the order that I did the sneak peeks on Instagram.

Fullsizeoutput_1e5c

Ooooh, you guessed it. A new set of Scribble Sticks! This set includes the long wished for Cheddar and Ocean! Yessssssssss. Scribble Sticks are one of my most used products, and I am so excited to have new colors for you. A few people asked if they're neon. They're not neon, but sometimes they look neon depending on how you use them. The set includes the colors we had to leave out last time (like Lapis), and also six new colors. Wait, what? Yep, you heard that right!

MDA60161_ScribbleSticks2

This leads us to sneak peek two.

Fullsizeoutput_1e63

How about a new blue? And a new green? And more! I have six new colors this release, and I am so happy to have them. The colors are more earthy than the rest of the line, so they add a richness and a depth of color that the line was missing.

MDQ53958_Marine MDQ59806_DWPaint_Buff MDQ59813_DWPaint_Eggplant

MDQ59837_DWPaint_Olive MDQ59844_DWPaint_Sedona MDQ59851_DWPaint_Peacock

The colors are Marine (dark greyish blue), Buff (off-white), Eggplant (red-based purple), Olive (yellow green), Sedona (red/orange/rust), and Peacock (a green teal). I know you will love them.

Next peek:

Yay, new stamps! Be still my beating heart.

MDR60963_AbstractFigures MDR60970_ContourFigures

MDR60987_FriendsToTheEnd MDR60994_InterestingFaces

These stamps celebrate my love of the sea, my love for drawing faces, and my love for abstract figures. I'm obsessed with all of them.

Next peek…this one generated a lot of excitment:

IMG_8083

Yes….you got it….two sets of washi tapes!

MDA59974_DinaWakleyMedia_WashiTape
MDA59974_DinaWakleyMedia_WashiTape

I am thrilled about these because I love the art I did for them. They are bright and fun and I have loved using them. These are a washi tape, not a Media Tape. My Media Tape has a strong adhesive. These have a more traditional washi adhesive. I think it's stronger then regular washi but not as strong as my Media Tape. I haven't had a problem at all with it sticking on paper. The only time I've had to glue it is when I'm sticking it to canvas and burlap.

Next peek:

IMG_8095

Okay, this is something that has been on my wishlist since day one. We now have printed tissues for collage! YAAAAAY!!!!! We have two kinds for you. One is a small packet of words and quotes, 3"x3". The second is a larger set of 7.5"x10" printed tissues with all-over patterns (and some blank sheets thrown in, too!). These tissues are great for under layers, top layers, or even focal points.

MediaCollageWords_MDA61083

MediaCollagePaper_MDA61076

Next peek:

IMG_8102

There are actually two peeks in this picture. I am not sure if anyone guessed it…

We have six new stencils, of course!

MDS60635_TornadoMDS60635_Tornado
MDS60635_TornadoMDS60635_Tornado
MDS60635_TornadoMDS60635_Tornado

I can't wait to show you how I use them, especially the abstract figures. They have lots of creative possibilities. They're meant to be a jumpstart to your figures. They're so fun to use.

The second peek in that photo…can you tell that the samples are prints pulled from a gel plate? I am thrilled to tell you that Dyan and I are jointly releasing gel plates, in partnership with Gel Press! Plus there are all kinds of accessories for your plates, like a cute pink brayer, a squeegee, and texture tools. The plates are custom sizes made just for us! One is large, and fits the Dylusions journal perfectly. The other one is actually a set of 3, sized to fit rectangular tags and also cute circle one that is a blast to play with.

Last peek:

IMG_8098

You all know that I love, love, love making handmade books. Here are a few exciting things that will help with that. First up, we have the cotton paper and the kraft paper in packs, so you can make signatures for your books. YAAAAY. This makes me SO happy. Combine these with Media Board covers and you have so many book-making possibilities.

MDJ59653_MediaKraftCardstockMDJ59653_MediaKraftCardstock

The Kraft paper is shipping mid-February.

Also, once I really started playing with my Media Journal, I knew we needed some clips. The clips are great for clipping things into the journal but are also wonderful for bookmaking projects. We have two sizes of these!

MDA60291_JournalClips_6pcsMDA60291_JournalClips_6pcs

I also knew we needed a heavier glue. My Gel Medium is seriously fantastic for thin paper. It dries clear and matte and you can write on it when its dry because it isn't overly sticky. But, it doesn't stick anything heavier than a piece of dictionary paper. Introducing Ultra Thick Gel Medium. This glue will stick heavier items like tags and cardstock, and it is forgiving and lets you reposition elements before it is dry. It is great on the burlap and canvas in the journal, too.

MDM62349_DWMedia_UltraThickGelMedium

And….best for last.

I didn't peek this one. Let me introduce you to another Media Journal. What makes this one different? Well, it is HUGE!!! My regular journal is about 8×10. This one is about 10×14. AAAAAAH, it is glorious!

This big journal is really a return to my roots. In my early journaling days, I would often use a really large watercolor journal. So I am excited to have this second journal in the line for those of you that are really up for a fun artistic challenge. This journal has the same four surfaces as the first journal. Le sigh.

MDJ61113_LargeMediaJournal

So….what do you think? Are you excited? I have SO many samples to show you. Here are a few, and I promise I will continue to share the rest this month.

Show Us Your Media Challenge 7! Unstoppable

Fullsizeoutput_1a32

Howdy, friends! I know December is a busy month, but you have until January 17th January 24th to participate in this challenge. I love this one, it's a great push for the new year.

Dina suym dec 01

Create a piece of art about being unstoppable. What are your personal speed bumps that slow you down? How do you triumph over them?

Here's my page. I did a collage on a burlap page in the Media Journal. I love the texture and dimension! I adhere most items with the Tim Holtz Tiny Attacher so I don't have to mess with glue on fabric.

Supplies:
Dina Wakley Media Journal
Dina Wakley Media Stamps: Oops, Oh Well, Scribbly Wings
Dina Wakley Media Scribble Sticks
Dina Wakley Media Acrylic: Night, Ruby, Lemon, Sky, Sterling, Magenta, Black
Idea-ology by Tim Holtz Cling Foam Stamps, Block Lower and Tiny Attacher

I love digging through my collage papers box to pull out random bits and make collages. This page started with many random pieces. I started layering them and then put the stamped images on top of all of the layers. My tip for creating collages: make sure you have a strong overlap. If you don't overlap strongly, your collage will feel disconnected and the elements will seem unrelated to each other.

I colored the stamped images from Oops, Oh Well and Scribbly Wings with Scribble Sticks and a bit of acrylic paint, and then I speckled them with Sterling.

I am hard on myself in most areas of my life, EXCEPT for art. In art, I give myself a break. I let myself fail. I let myself make ugly art. I truly don't care if what I do isn't good. That makes me unstoppable because I am not holding myself back.

I can't wait to see your interpretation of the challenge. Please share your art. We love it!

Note this challenge does not take the place of the monthly challenges we have in the Dina Wakley Media Tribe Facebook group. If you're not a member of the tribe, please join us! Artists in the group post lots of cool art and inspiration.
